MFC Tailwater Dubbing

MFC Tailwater Dubbing from Montana Fly Company blends soft natural rabbit fur with synthetic Antron fibers to produce a fine, easy-to-control dubbing with natural movement and a restrained amount of flash. Designed with technical trout patterns in mind, it is especially effective for building slim nymphs, sow bugs, scuds, emergers, cripples, and other small subsurface flies.

Why Rabbit and Antron?

Tailwater Dubbing combines two fibers that do different jobs.

The rabbit fur creates the soft, fine foundation. It is easy to form into a controlled dubbing noodle, allowing the tier to build the thin bodies required for small nymphs and emergers without unnecessary bulk. Once wet, the natural fibers take on movement and a softer profile in the current.

The Antron mixed through the rabbit introduces small points of reflected light. The effect is considerably more restrained than a heavily flashed synthetic dubbing, making Tailwater Dubbing useful when you want some life in a fly without turning the entire body into an attractor.

Best Uses

MFC Tailwater Dubbing is particularly well suited to flies where a thin body and slightly irregular natural texture are more important than a coarse, highly picked-out profile.

For a clean nymph or emerger, use a small amount of dubbing and build a tight, tapered noodle on the thread. For sow bugs, scuds, and buggy thoraxes, the finished body can be lightly brushed or picked to expose more of the rabbit and Antron fibers.

Choosing a Color

Tailwater Dubbing is produced in both natural imitative shades and brighter attractor colors.

Sow Bug Gray and Rainbow Gray Sow are natural starting points for sow bugs and scuds. Tan, Amber, Bighorn, Olive, and Black cover a broad range of aquatic insects and nymph bodies. Pink, Fluorescent Pink, and Orange provide brighter options for attractor nymphs, hot-spotted sow bugs, and other patterns where additional visibility is useful.

A Technical Tailwater Dubbing

Highly pressured trout frequently demand flies with less bulk and less artificial-looking flash. MFC Tailwater Dubbing occupies the useful middle ground between extremely fine dry-fly dubbing and coarse, aggressively flashy nymph blends.

The rabbit provides the natural texture and workability. The Antron provides just enough synthetic flash to keep the finished body from appearing flat. Together they make a versatile rabbit-and-Antron fly tying dubbing for small subsurface patterns where profile, movement, and controlled sparkle all matter.
