Wild steelhead. Alaska in the fall.

Work the river. Settle into the lodge. Go again tomorrow.

Read the seam. Set the angle. Let the fly work. Then do it again with a little more understanding of the water in front of you. Alaska Steelhead Company builds its program around that pursuit on the Kenai Peninsula.

The fishing spans intimate wading water and broader rivers reached by boat, with helicopter options for anglers who want to extend the trip's reach. Nymphing and swinging both have a place. Guides choose the approach around the water, the conditions and what you want from the day.

Back in Clam Gulch, the lodge and cabins put Cook Inlet in view and a prepared meal on the table. We see this as a strong choice for anglers who want to give steelhead their full attention while the lodge team handles the daily details.

Find your fit

Who is this trip for?

This trip fits anglers who want a full week centered on steelhead, with guided days, a comfortable place to return and flexibility in how they fish. It works for experienced two-handed anglers and for guests ready to build their skills with help on the water.

The Stay

A base above Cook Inlet

Alaska Steelhead Company's new lodge and cabins opened for the 2026 season in Clam Gulch. The setting overlooks Cook Inlet, with mountains and volcanoes across the water. A bright great room, dining area, deck and outdoor gathering spaces give the fishing day a comfortable finish.

Rooms and cabins

Guest rooms are arranged in lodge and cabin accommodations. Double-occupancy and single-room options are offered, including single rooms with either shared or private bathrooms. We will confirm your exact room, bedding and bathroom arrangement when preparing the quote. Daily housekeeping and laundry service are available.

Meals with the fishing day in mind

Chef Felix Barron prepares breakfast before departure, shore lunches and three-course dinners with wine pairings. Menus draw on available seafood and other ingredients. Share dietary requirements in advance so the kitchen can plan for them.

Time away from the river

Non-angling guests can discuss Homer outings, coastal walks, photography and seasonal excursions before booking. A vehicle and host may be available through the lodge. Confirm the schedule and any extra charges for the activities that matter to your group.

Travel

Fly to Anchorage, then Kenai

Plan your main flight into Anchorage, followed by a separate flight to Kenai. Grant Aviation and Aleutian Airways both work for this 20-minute flight. Check schedules and baggage allowances for your dates before purchasing tickets.

Lodge transfers

An Alaska Steelhead Company host meets guests at Kenai Airport for the approximately 45-minute drive to Clam Gulch. Round-trip Kenai ground transfers are included. Final arrival details and lodge directions are provided with your trip arrangements.

The standard week

  • Sunday: arrive in Kenai by 5 p.m. for the lodge transfer. Standard check-in is 3 p.m.
  • Monday through Friday: five full guided fishing days.

Give connections enough room

An overnight in Anchorage may suit guests with a long inbound journey. Arrival- or departure-day fishing is an extra arrangement and needs to be coordinated with your flights. Confirm the complete itinerary before adding these days.

Fishing

A program built around steelhead

Steelhead are the main target and are released. You'll work three principal river systems, moving between smaller walking-and-wading water and a larger glacial river. River selection changes with conditions and the anglers' needs.

Swinging and nymphing

Nymph rigs are a practical choice on the smaller rivers and from the boat. Suitable runs also offer opportunities to swing flies with single-hand, switch or Spey rods. Discuss your preferred style before booking so the guides understand what matters most to you.

How you reach the water

Expect a mix of access methods. Some fishing begins on foot. Inflatable kayaks may help cover water at higher flows. Drift boats or power drifters provide access to larger water and move anglers between wading locations. The Fly Out package adds helicopter fishing to the itinerary.

Options as conditions change

The larger rivers draw from a lake and icefield, giving the team another option when rain affects smaller streams. Weather, water levels and safety still guide the daily plan.

Prepare your own outfit

Rods, reels and terminal tackle are supplied. For anglers bringing their own equipment, the lodge recommends 7- or 8-weight Spey outfits for larger water and shorter switch or single-hand outfits where appropriate. Match the head, tips and leader to the rod and the intended method. We can help review the setup before departure.

Other species

Silver salmon, Dolly Varden and rainbow trout may provide additional opportunities, depending on timing and itinerary. Build the trip around steelhead and discuss any secondary targets with us in advance.

FAQs

Do I need to be an experienced Spey caster?

Tell us your casting and steelhead background. The program uses several methods, and your guide can help match the approach to the water and your experience. We recommend practicing with your chosen outfit before the trip.

Is there a separate Spey School?

Yes. The operator offers a focused program combining casting instruction and guided fishing. The 2027 calendar lists October 24 through 28, with four nights and three days. Pricing and the instructor lineup need confirmation before booking.

What personal gear should I bring?

Bring sound waders, a waterproof rain jacket, insulating layers, wool socks, polarized glasses and a waterproof pack. Waders and boots are not included. The outfitter asks for rubber-soled boots, no felt and no permanently fixed studs. Discuss traction choices because studs cannot be worn in the boats. A wading staff is on its recommended list.

How much walking and wading is involved?

It varies by river and conditions. Some days involve walking to smaller water; others use boats between fishing locations. Let us know about balance, mobility or endurance concerns so suitable access can be discussed before a reservation is made.

Can a non-angling partner come?

Yes. The lodge welcomes companions who want to explore the peninsula or relax on the property. Ask about suitable seasonal outings, host availability and companion pricing when we plan your week.

Can I keep a steelhead?

The operator's steelhead program is catch and release. Other species and any harvest arrangements must be discussed for the specific dates and itinerary.

What about weather or changed fishing plans?

Guides select the day's water around conditions and guest ability. They may adjust access or the schedule for safety. We will review the relevant terms with your booking information.

Are Wi-Fi and phone service reliable?

Ask us to confirm the current connectivity arrangements if you need to work or make scheduled calls during your stay.
