Developed by Ed Story in the mid 1950's. The fly and the method(s) to fish it was an instant success. Now fished worldwide.

A longtime favorite among fly anglers, the Crackleback has earned its place in fly boxes across the country thanks to its unmatched versatility and fish-catching ability. Whether you're drifting it on the surface or stripping it beneath, this fly draws strikes from even the most selective trout.

The Crackleback is uniquely effective because it walks the line between dry fly, emerger, and even wet fly territory. Its signature peacock herl body and palmered hackle create a natural silhouette and enticing movement that mimic a variety of aquatic insects. When fished dry, it rides high and skates beautifully across riffles and still water alike. Give it a slight twitch, and the hackle pulses just enough to provoke aggressive takes. When we strip it subsurface, it transforms into a convincing swimmer—ideal when trout are chasing emergers or small baitfish.

We recommend fishing the Crackleback on a light tippet with a floating or intermediate line, depending on the presentation. It shines in late summer and fall when terrestrials are abundant, but we’ve had great success with it year-round.

At Feather Craft, we understand the importance of flies that are built to last, which is why we ensure every Crackleback we sell is tied with premium materials by expert hands. Whether you're new to the sport or a seasoned angler, you’ll appreciate how this humble pattern continues to outperform flashier options.

We stand behind the Crackleback because it consistently delivers. It’s a staple in our personal fly selections, and we’re confident it will become one in yours. Experience the fly that brings fish to the net—experience the Crackleback.
